The old GM might have been a bad car company, but it was launching some seriously good cars, especially (but not limited to) the ones developed at Opel in Germany. The Opel Insignia is current European Car of the Year, which bodes well for the related Buick LaCrosse and Regal. Now Opel has done it again with the new Astra. Honestly it’s one of the best compact hatchbacks made anywhere in the world, a car fit to take on the VW Golf for refinement and driving ability.
But for Americans, the meaning of all this is uncertain. The Astra was originally supposed to provide the basis for a Saturn and a Saab, but GM has jettisoned those brands, as well as Opel itself.

Lexus is headed to SEMA in Las Vegas with an arsenal of custom vehicles. A total of nine Lexus products will be in attendance, tuned by the likes of Five Axis, VIP Auto Salon and JT Grey Racing in addition to a line of factory-customized F-Sport offerings.
Five Axis plans to bring along both the CT 200h that the company unveiled at the Chicago Auto Show this year as well as a new GS F Sport project (seen above). The latter vehicle wears a full widebody conversion as well as custom paint, brake hardware from StopTech and a full AirRunner TC-5 air suspension.
VIP Auto Salon, meanwhile, plans to show off a special IS 350C with custom carbon fiber aero work, a Power Enterprise Rotex supercharger kit for a little bit more speed and a TOMS upper shock tower brace.
But we’re most taken with the idea of the Lexus LX 570 by JT Grey Racing. Sadly, there aren’t yet any pictures of that beast, but Lexus says it has been built to be a full-blown off-road racer with 37-inch BF Goodrich Baja TA tires, 17-inch Lexus custom wheels, lots of off road lighting and Sparco race seats inside.

Mystery Super Lexus LS.

We spy, with the lens of our spy guy, a rather unique Lexus LS that’s taken to the track. Spotted lapping Germany’s Nürburgring, this particular LS is wearing puffed-out fenders, a strongly styled decklid spoiler, what appears to be a faux nose hiding new bodywork, deep side skirts and a pair of vents on the hood. Something sporty is afoot, and we’re itching to know more.
Toyota is clearly testing a super sporty version of its flagship luxury sedan. What’s not clear, however, is what exactly is going on underneath the bodywork. We do know that this is work of the automaker, and not an aftermarket tuner testing some new performance parts out. The license tags on the car are from Cologne, and the car was spotted at the automaker’s garage nearby.
Could we be staring at a Lexus LS F in disguise? The automaker has hinted in the past at such a car coming to market over the years, and this luxury sedan is certainly wearing some athletic upgrades. Funny, we thought for sure that a variant of the new GS was going to be next in line to get the F Sport treatment. Could this just be a one-off piece for the Tokyo Motor Show or Tokyo Auto Salon, or is it indicative of something more?
Final amusing note: The wheelman at the helm of this mystery “LS F’ must be new to the ‘Ring – that giant “L” on the rear window indicates he’s a Learner.

2012 BMW M5.

The 2012 BMW M5 has finally landed on U.S. shores and BMW has trotted out its oldest sibling – the same E28 we drove last year – at California’s Laguna Seca raceway to mark the occasion.
After its debut at the Nürburgring early this year, BMW boxed up its latest M machine for the festivities here in Monterey and will be shuffling it around to various events throughout the week.
Our first in-the-flesh impressions are beyond favorable, with an exterior that’s far less gauche than its predecessor, finally putting the “executive” back in “executive sports sedan.” Inside, the professional demeanor carries over, with less flash and a more driver-focused interior.
As if you need a reminder, the M5 now packs a modified version of the same twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 fitted to the X5 M and X6 M, putting out 560 horsepower and 500 pound-feet of torque – the latter of which is available from 1,500 to over 5,750 rpm. Redline is a decidedly un-M-like 7,250 rpm, but the blast to 60 mph happens in claimed 4.2 seconds when fitted with the seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
And what about a manual option? BMW officials delivered the standard “we’re looking into it” line, but we suspect they’re already testing a six-speed ‘box that could be an option after the M5 goes on sale in the U.S. this February. 2012 Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series Coupe revealed in all its splendor. The only Black Series type of treatment that really grabbed and wrung out our hearts and minds so far was the ultra-hot CLK DTM AMG back in 2005, which – technically – was pre-Black Series. Fine. All the Black Series models that came after should have been more hardcore instead of the mildly up-done aesthetic exercises versus their standard AMG-badged counterparts.
Then, we got our first glimpse at the newest Black Series hotness during our recent drive day in southern France with the 2012 Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG lineup. It’s the C63 AMG Coupe Black Series – the most powerful Vitamin C ever from Stuttgart and Affalterbach – that will do all it can to make us forget about our holy experiences in the BMW M3 GTS and Audi Quattro concept. Tough acts to follow, Herr Daimler.

2011 Ford F-450.

The 2011 Ford F-450 represents the top dog among the Super Duty lineup, trumped only by the F-550, which is intended for commercial use only and offered solely as a chassis cab. Compared to the supporting F-250 and F-350 models, the F-450 is only available as a crew cab with dual rear wheels, four-wheel drive and a diesel-fueled engine. The F-450 also features a wider-track monobeam front suspension and bigger disc brakes to contend with higher load-bearing capabilities. Basically, it’s the Shaquille O’Neal of Ford pickups.
Like the rest of the 2011 Super Duty lineup, the F-450 receives new exterior styling to accompany its increased ability to get the job done. Behind the blocky grille is a new, Ford-built 6.7-liter “PowerStroke” turbodiesel that replaces the troublesome Navistar diesels from previous years. This big diesel is certainly adept at towing trailers or equipment, as it churns out an impressive 800 pound-feet of torque. The F-450′s fifth-wheel towing capacity is a smidge less compared to last year, but at 24,400 pounds it’s still greater than every non-commercial truck on the market.
We’re also “dually” impressed by the Super Duty’s flexibility that allows it to be configured for a variety of uses — from a down-and dirty work truck to a luxurious hauler. Also noteworthy is the increased fuel economy and lower emissions from the diesel power plant. Regardless of which route you choose, you’ll also be treated to class-leading refinement, comfort and capabilities that set the benchmark for other manufacturers to follow.
Choosing a heavy-duty truck these days is tough, however, especially with the Chevrolet Silverado/GMC Sierra twins also receiving a redesign this year and the Ram 3500 still benefiting from its own update last year. You’re certainly not going to go wrong with any of these trucks, and much of your choice will come down to brand preference and pricing. But if you need to tow more than 20,000 pounds, you have but one choice: the 2011 Ford F-450. Thankfully, we think quite highly of that lone choice.
